Get Involved

If you're wondering about how to get involved in IC Radio, it's easy. There is tons of stuff going on - just take a look at the list below for some details. Look out for us at Freshers' Fair (we'll be the loud ones in Beit Quad), and come along to our forthcoming FREE BEER AND BISCUITS event (more details to follow). Membership of IC Radio gives you the opportunity to do everything on the list below, and costs just £8 for the whole academic year.

Presenting

Have you ever listened to the radio and thought "Hey, I can do better than that"? Well, you probably can, and we'll show you how. We'll give you full training on all our studio equipment, tips on how to present, and the opportunity to practice off-air. Generally, anyone who wants to present a programme is welcome to do so - your very own regular show could be on the air within a week!

Reviewing

Each week, record companies send us a huge pile of CDs. We review it all and pick out the best tracks to go on our playlist. We need members to help review new material and maintain our massive CD catalogue. So if you want to get your hands on new releases weeks before they hit the shops, contact us.

Production

IC Radio operates a fully digital professional recording studio, where student bands can come and record music at reasonable rates. We also produce and broadcast many live sessions with well-known bands. You have the unique opportunity to join in and gain valuable experience in recording and producing live music.

News

IC Radio is expanding its role as a provider of up-to-date college news. To do this, we need reporters, interviewers and newsreaders. We also run a variety of other speech-based programmes, such as our weekly review show and an award-winning science-based talk show. Any IC student can get involved.

Technical

Radio stations are full of many interesting shiny things, from the humble CD player to the huge and somewhat daunting broadcast desk. They sit in racks and in the studios, allowing us to broadcast 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. However, if they break, we're in trouble. Maintaining the equipment of a radio station is a huge challenge, but also highly rewarding. If you'd like to help us do just about anything technical and radio-related, come down and visit us!

Website

Our website won the national Student Radio Award for Best New Media Innovation in 2000. It's full of useful features, including our ReLive service, which allows you to listen to ANY of our shows whenever you want to (a concept that we introduced long before the BBC!). However, we always need people to update the content and introduce new features.

Discos

IC Radio is not just a radio station - we also provide equipment and DJs for dinners, parties, discos and other events run by ICU clubs and societies. We need people to DJ at discos, and also to set up the technical equipment. It's always a good laugh, especially watching drunk people dance to the cheese that you're playing.

Publicity

Despite our relatively high website listener statistics and our high programming quality (outlined by our recent triumph at the 2002 national Student Radio Awards), one of IC Radio's biggest problems is that many students don't know we exist. We constantly try to overcome this by promoting ourselves to the student population. We need people to design posters, write our column in Felix, and generally encourage people to listen to IC Radio.

Finance

If you're a bit of a budding accountant, or you just like the power that goes with having control over lots of money, then perhaps you could help us out. We need someone to take over as our Treasurer, and be in charge of all the money that goes in and out of IC Radio's budget (surprisingly for a student society, that's quite a lot of money!). You don't need any previous financial experience - all you need to be able to do is write, because you can cheat and use a calculator if you can't do arithmetic. It's satisfying making someone's day by giving them money, especially when it isn't yours in the first place!

Get Involved

Last, but by no means least, the day-to-day running of the station is very important, especially given the fact that we broadcast continuously during term. If you'd like to help us out and gain valuable experience in managing the affairs of a radio station, then get involved with any or all of the above activities and attend our weekly committee meetings on Thursday lunchtimes. Once you've got the feel for how we operate, there are plenty of opportunities to become an Assistant Station Manager, and that's just the beginning...
